Summer is festival season in Tokachi. As the warm months arrive, Obihiro and the surrounding towns come alive with fireworks, dancing, and traditional matsuri. Here are some of the highlights to look out for in 2026.
Kachimai Fireworks Festival (August 13, 2026)
The Kachimai Fireworks Festival is one of Hokkaido’s most famous summer fireworks displays. The 74th edition is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, August 13, 2026, from about 19:20 to 21:00, launched over the Tokachi River riverbed near the Tokachi-ohashi bridge in Obihiro. The event is ticketed, and the viewing area is open to ticket holders only, so plan and book ahead. Learn more in our guide to the Kachimai Fireworks Festival.
Obihiro Heigen Matsuri (August 14–15, 2026)
Held right after the fireworks, the Obihiro Heigen Matsuri is one of the city’s three great festivals, with a history spanning more than half a century. Expect lively Bon dancing, powerful taiko drumming, portable shrines, and rows of food stalls filling the streets of central Obihiro.
Shikaoi Hakujahime Matsuri (July 4, 2026)
In the town of Shikaoi, the Hakujahime (“White Snake Princess”) Festival is planned for the evening of July 4, 2026, from around 17:30 to 21:15. Themed around a local legend, it is a charming way to experience a smaller community summer festival.
