About the Obihiro Ice Festival
The Obihiro Ice Festival (Obihiro Hyo Matsuri) is one of Hokkaido’s longest-running winter festivals, held each year in late January. Centered on Midorigaoka Park, it fills the snow-covered grounds with ice and snow sculptures and a range of winter attractions.
What to Expect
Highlights usually include large carved ice sculptures, snow slides for children, hot local food stalls, and winter fireworks after dark. It is a family-friendly way to experience a true Tokachi winter.
Visiting Tips
The festival runs for a few days in late January, but exact dates change each year, so check before you go. Temperatures often fall well below freezing, so dress in warm layers with gloves and insulated boots. Midorigaoka Park is a short trip from central Obihiro.
