Season-by-Season Guide
Spring (April–May)
Snow melts and the plain turns green. Cherry blossoms arrive late in Hokkaido, usually around early May, and the air is fresh but still cool — a quiet, uncrowded time to visit.
Summer (June–August)
The most popular season. Gardens are in full bloom, farmland is lush, and temperatures are pleasantly mild compared with mainland Japan. It is the best time for scenic drives and for visiting Naitai Highland Farm.
Autumn (September–October)
Harvest season brings fresh produce, fall colors, and crisp, clear air. It is one of the best times for food lovers and photographers.
Winter (December–March)
Cold and snowy, but with many clear, sunny days. This is the season for snow scenery, winter illuminations, hot springs, and the famous Jewelry Ice on the Toyokoro coast (January–February). Allow extra time for winter driving.
Quick Recommendation
If it is your first visit and your dates are flexible, June through September is ideal for gardens, food, and driving, while January and February are best for snow and Jewelry Ice.
