Lake Shikaribetsu (Shikaribetsu-ko)
A lake in the sky, which is located at the highest altitude of all the lakes in Hokkaido
Lake Shikaribetsu, which is located 800 meters above sea level, the highest place in Hokkaido, is the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park. It is considered that this lake was also created by damming of the river due to a volcanic eruption 30,000 years ago. The lake is surrounded by primeval forest. Ancient nature can be seen around the lake, a valuable habitat of pikas, or living fossils, and the area is a natural treasure trove abounding with various wild birds and animals. On the way from Obihiro and Otofuke to Lake Shikaribetsu, there is a fan-shaped area with the Ogigahara observation deck from where one can overlook the Tokachi plain. Lake Komadome can also be viewed from the roadside. Lake Shinonome, one of the three great secret lakes in Hokkaido, is also close by.
