Rawan butterbur Ornamental and Picking field (Rawan-buki Kansyou-hojyou)
Rawan butterbur leaves, which are large enough to serve as umbrellas, are delicious to eat!
Rawan butterbur, one of local specialties of Ashoro, is a designated Hokkaido Heritage. It grows stalks of up to 10 cm in diameter and three meters in height, much higher than the average height of an adult. The best season to visit is from the end of June to the middle of July. There is a field where one can enjoy Rawan butterbur in the Rawan district, the eastern part of Ashoro Town, and where one can get a close look at it. Although Rawan butterbur has thick fibers, it is tender with a rich flavor.
