Obihiro Heigen Festival (Obihiro Heigen Matsuri)
Heigen Festival is one of the three major festivals in Obihiro, and is held at the end of the summer. The city is filled with a festive atmosphere.
During the three days of Obon every year, the center of Obihiro is a pedestrian precinct, and various events are held. At night on the first day, Yumefuruya is held by young people, with a performance of carrying portable shrines and dancing while holding straws in the hands. In the afternoon of the second day there are powerful drum performances called Heigen Drum Festival, with about 300 participants from all over Hokkaido. At night on the second and third days, Obihiro Bon dance is held at the main site and performers wearing original costumes dance around the site. Other events include Bon dance for children, street performances and high school brass band performances. This festival has various music and dance events that one can experience and enjoy.
