Moor Hot Spring Firefly Viewing (Moor Onsen Yume-botaru Kansyoukai)
The lights from fireflies that have come back to life at the hot springs create fantastic scenery against the summer night sky, causing everyone to relax.
Many years ago fireflies used to be seen at night around Tokachigawa Onsen (hot springs) as a feature of the summer, but since around 1991 their number has been decreasing with the development of the hot spring area, and the beautiful scenery had all but disappeared. Citizens then started making efforts to recover that beautiful scenery, and recreated an ideal environment with a clear stream so that fireflies can live there again. The stream consists of 100% vegetative moor hot spring water that contains lots of minerals, and is rare in the world, and it was the first time in Japan that fireflies successfully came back to the area. The dancing light of fireflies (Yumebotaru) stimulates the brain’s alpha waves, increasing our energy. When you watch the fantastic dancing lights of fireflies and remind yourself of the firefly’s short life span in the summer night, you will relax both body and mind, and may not feel the summer heat.
