Obihiro Ice Festival (Obihiro Koori Matsuri)
Obihiro Ice Festival is one of the three major festivals in Obihiro. Local citizens participate to make snow statues and ice sculptures. Please don’t miss the fireworks show on the eve of the festival!
Obihiro Ice Festival, a festival in honor of winter, is held at Midorigaoka Park in mid-winter. There are about 56 snow statues/ice sculptures, some made by citizens, as well as huge snow sculptures built by the Self-Defense Force. The fireworks show is held at the opening ceremony. Fireworks lighting up the clear, crisp winter sky are completely different from others. At night, it is very cold, but the illumination of the snow statues and ice sculptures create a magical atmosphere. At the festival site there are also slides made of snow and ice, which are popular with children. The Tokachi Snowball Fight for Children is also held and there are many other attractions including snow rafting and Ice Café.
